How to Solo Travel : Personal Stories and Tips

Long ago, our ancestors were always moving, looking for food, shelter, a better life. and better opportunities. Their way of life was emblematic of ceaseless motion, resilience, and a profound bond with nature. In stark contrast, today's modern world sees many of us bound to desks for nine hours a day or confined to school classrooms. The rhythm of the week is often dictated by repetitive routines, with weekends hoped to be an escape, but often reduced to recovery from the weariness. The innate wanderlust and curiosity that fueled our forebears seem stifled in our contemporary age of structure and routine.

Traveling alone has always been my path to profound self-discovery. For some reason, I just cannot stay in one place for a long time. Even though I lean towards introversion, something inside compels me to keep moving and seek out diverse individuals. This journey has fortified my strength, independence, resilience, and broadened my perspective.

Discovering the "Why"

For many, purpose drives action. Not everyone may be cut out for solo travels, particularly if you thrive in the company of others. Yet, like a muscle, the ability to travel alone can be honed. It's a transformative experience, one every individual owes to themselves. Why? You are the sole constant in your life, and nurturing that inner relationship is paramount. Stepping out of your comfort zone, immersing in diverse cultures, and being truly alone magnifies your self-awareness and presence. When you're solo, all your energy is channeled inward and towards your surroundings, making the journey intensely personal.

Solo Travel Tips

1️⃣ Start slow and easy: If solo travel feels daunting, begin by spending a weekend in a nearby destination, just an hour's drive or so from home. Instead of scrolling through social media or indulging in lengthy video calls, immerse yourself in the moment. Cherish the solitude and truly connect with your surroundings.

2️⃣ Journal & Capture Moments: Writing has always been therapeutic for me. Reflective questions can redefine your travel experience. I love collecting postcards and jotting down memories of each place.

  • What personal discoveries do I hope to make on this journey? Delving into your own expectations and desires can lead to more profound insights during your travels.

  • What local customs or traditions can I immerse myself in to truly connect with this place? This encourages you to go beyond the touristy surface and genuinely understand the culture and people. Be a traveler, not a tourist.

  • How can I document my feelings, sights, and experiences in a way that captures the essence of this trip?

  • What can I do today that pushes me slightly out of my comfort zone? Challenging yourself, even in small ways, can lead to personal growth and memorable experiences.

  • 3️⃣ Engage & Connect: Engaging with others is a pivotal life skill, and travel is a perfect opportunity to hone it. If you're journeying solo and keen to connect, consider staying in hostels. And before you jump to conclusions about hostel stays, let me share a personal experience:

    • On a trip to Vienna, I lodged at 'Ruthensteiner' Hostel. So impactful was the experience that I extended my stay thrice! With musical instruments around and individuals from every corner of the world, it was a cultural potpourri. For just 27€ a night, I experienced luxury, met an endearing Italian family who prepared a delectable pasta feast for us all, and played the piano in harmonious unison with fellow travelers. Despite falling ill due to my hectic travels, my dorm mates rallied around, ensuring my comfort and even doing my laundry. Profound conversations were had, and to this day, I maintain connections with many I met there.

    • Beyond hostels, parks offer a serene backdrop for striking up conversations. There's always someone willing to chat on a quiet bench. But a word of caution: keep it genuine and skip the clichéd talk about the weather. Offering a snack, though perhaps not chips for health's sake, can be a great conversation starter! 😉

  • 4️⃣ Discover Through Guided Tours: While traveling, guided tours stand out as an exceptional way to bond with others. My Thailand trip was enriched manifold through such tours. The guides, with their unparalleled warmth, were among the most gracious individuals I encountered. Their in-depth local knowledge coupled with a passion for sharing tales and tidbits allows you to experience destinations in a unique light. With them, not only do you gain a local's perspective, but you also find comfort in their expertise, ensuring a carefree exploration.
